| WCAS can now perform mercury (Hg) analysis
using atomic fluorescence (AF) spectroscopy. In the Leeman
Labs Hydra AF Gold Plus system, mercury is determined using the
traditional cold vapor technique coupled with dual AF detectors.
The system is compliant with EPA Methods 1631
and 245.7.
Advantages to this new technology include extremely low detection limits [0.05 ppt - that's parts per trillion) and a a wide dynamic range (ppm to sub-ppt)]. |
Samples are prepared by oxidation to convert mercury compounds to Hg(II) . The samples are then subjected to cold vapor analysis using stannous chloride to reduce Hg(II) to Hg(0) which is volatile. Atomic fluorescence spectroscopy is much more sensitive than traditional atomic absorbance. To reach sub-ppt levels the system also allows the Hg(0) vapor to be concentrated onto a gold foil. The wide dynamic range is provided by having one detector in line with the gold film concentrator and another without. This system provides for automatic pre-screening of samples for the appropriate range. |
